Enhance the efficiency & reliability of the U.S. power grid
FERC Order 881 was implemented to improve the efficiency and reliability of the U.S. power grid by enhancing the way transmission lines are utilized and increasing the transparency of transmission line ratings. As the energy landscape shifts toward more renewable and distributed energy sources, and as energy demand rises due to factors like the growth of energy-intensive technologies such as artificial intelligence, traditional transmission management methods have struggled to keep pace. This order seeks to address these challenges by making better use of existing infrastructure and ensuring the grid can meet future demands.
A key element of FERC Order 881 is the requirement for transmission providers to use ambient-adjusted ratings (AARs), which reflect real-time weather conditions, rather than relying on static, worst-case weather assumptions. These ratings allow for more accurate and efficient use of transmission lines, reducing unnecessary underutilization. By optimizing how lines are used under current conditions, the order aims to help utilities improve grid flexibility, ease congestion, and accommodate the growing demand for cleaner, renewable energy sources.
While the order does not mandate the use of dynamic line ratings, which would incorporate additional factors such as wind speed, it does provide a framework for future exploration of these technologies. The regulation also requires transmission providers to comply within three years, ensuring that market operators are ready to support dynamic line ratings if they choose to adopt them. FERC Order 881 marks a major step toward making the grid more efficient and cost-effective while maintaining reliability for consumers.
Key compliance requirements for public utility transmission providers include the use of ambient adjusted ratings in their:
Additionally, transmission providers must adhere to the following parameters:
U.S transmission providers will need to develop and implement Ambient Adjusted Ratings (AAR) for in service transmission lines by July 12, 2025. The deadline to request an extension is in November of 2024.
